About Aldershaw Handmade Tiles

[vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-1 vc_col-lg-10″][vc_column_text css=””]Each tile is unique and bears the characteristics of the craftsman or woman who made it.

Whilst Aldershaw are not major brickmakers we do manufacture specials, either standard or purpose made and a limited production of Imperial size and 2″ bricks together with specialised brick mullion windows air bricks and a host of other products.

Of the many restoration products, mathematical tiles are a significant proportion. These tiles are made in all roof tile colours, either sanded, rubbed or glazed in a range of sizes and profiles. Mathematical tiles have been part of Britain’s architectural heritage since the early 1700’s. They were probably first introduced to update and make weathertight old timber framed buildings and there are many buildings with tile facades still in existence, in Rye Hastings, Lewes, Brighton and Althorp House.

Another major product is our exclusive ‘Sussex Terracotta’ floor tiles, with a range of sizes and shapes in seven colours.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1715681014341{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″]

Here at Aldershaw we care about protecting our Architectural Heritage as much as we do the environment, which is a duty that we take very seriously.
We are developing our Net Zero plan and since inception have had a comprehensive programme of waste minimalization and recycle all waste, crush cans and compost food waste.

Heat efficiency and recovery is used in the manufacturing process with combined heat and power (CHP) and solar panels since 2004. We harvest rain and surface water for our process and other non potable uses. LED lighting was installed throughout the Factory in 2019, self regulating taps since, .Our Biomass boiler, which contributes to heat in the driers and is fuelled from fallen wood from our woodland.

We now collect our parcels from a near by Parcel shop reducing the carbon footprint of your parcel by an average of 45%*

Aldershaw Handmade Tiles

[vc_column_text css=”” text_align=”center” font_size=”18px”]Aldershaw make ‘Truly hand made roof and floor tiles’ employing traditional methods and skills passed down by centuries of English tile makers.

The Wadhurst clay is dug from our own pit in the heart of the Sussex Countryside and imparts that warmth of colour in subtle tones of Red and Orange that is so characteristic of the Weald of Kent and Sussex.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-1 vc_col-lg-10″][vc_column_text css=””]

Aldershaw hand made tiles are actively sought by conservationists, architects and planners whenever the project calls for something special and genuine.

Ancient or modern, Aldershaw tiles will enhance any property and will aid the planning process in areas of outstanding natural beauty or other sensitive areas.

Nothing can be as natural or authentic for conservation restoration or repair as the genuine Aldershaw tile,
its rich colours, subtle variations in texture create a patina that is usually only associated with the timeless
elegance of a by-gone age.

Aldershaw – Protecting England’s Architectural Heritage

As with all ‘Truly hand made’ products each tile is a unique work of art, reflecting the individual craftsmanship of its maker.

Brick and tile are arguably the most important building materials and certainly the most visible components of the built environment in our villages, towns and cities.

The rationality of architectural design in Britain owes much to its geography and geology, building materials due to their weight were not transported for until the last few decades, which explains the wide range of colours available in different regions and due in the most part to the local geology of the materials used.

Compare if you will the orange and soft reds of the southeast with the blues and browns of Staffordshire, the Buffs of Cambridgeshire and Ely, the Limestone of the Pennines, the Slate of Wales & Cambria and the Granite of Scotland.

We produce products to blend in with most regions but in particular the Greater Southeast and Cambridge Ely and the Cotswold.

Sussex Heritage Trust Award

Many congratulations to Mr Anthony C D Kindell on his AWARD at the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards on Thursday 7th July at Pangdean Old Barn, Pyecombe.

There were 20 Awards and 14 Highly Commended projects announced this year at the sold out Awards luncheon hosted by the President of the Trust, The Rt Hon Lord Egremont, DL.

Here is the citation from Dr John Godfrey’s speech:

“Down a country farm track about a mile north of Hastings is a factory whose produce contributes greatly to the conservation of many prestigious buildings throughout the British Isles and Eire and has done for the last seventeen years.

It is where manufacture takes place and raw clay is transported into the beauty of radiant terracotta.

Aldershaw Handmade Tiles are a truly handmade process using the 150 million year old Wadhurst clay on their own site.  The tiles have bought beauty to many significant buildings.

Recently a new roof on the Queen’s House at the Tower of London, a roof on the medieval barn Harmondsworth Great Barn, rooves on the Real Tennis Court at Hampton Court, St James’ Church in Piccadilly and the National Trust properties in West Wycombe.

Internationally Aldershaw tiles have been supplied to a palace in Sweden, a chateau in Bordeaux, houses in Holland and floors in Eire and the USA.

To know that in all his time at Aldershaw Tony has not paid himself a salary, is perhaps the measure of a devotee of his art.

Recently, Tony has experience a stroke and despite his ill health he still is present daily for his workforce and customers.

A true and unsung hero of craftsmanship in Sussex.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
